SLEEPING WITH DOGS AND OTHER LOVERS

In the first installment of Dumont’s planned romance series, paranormal dogs and oversexed exes plague a matchmaking service.

Cynthia Amas wants to start a new career. The former marketing executive is launching herself as a personalized matchmaker, pairing friends and new clients together and sometimes stepping in to make sure their dates go perfectly. When Max, the ex she loved and lost, reappears in Los Angeles, she’s torn between renewing their relationship with supercharged sex and focusing on her career. She decides she can manage both; complications immediately arise. Her arrival at the wrong hotel room—and the resultant accidental same-sex groping that leaves her completely aroused—is only the beginning of a comedy of errors: Max winds up in bed with Cynthia’s groping buddy and her girlfriend, as Cynthia uses a little light S&M to take out her frustration on a boring suitor. On the matchmaking front, a team of paranormal dogs keep customer Lolita from closing the deal with a potential partner, and Cynthia’s mother decides to try a bit of matchmaking of her own, introducing Cynthia to a handsome gynecologist. Dumont’s serviceable prose weaves in and out of the characters’ lives and loves, providing plenty of titillating sex scenes without promising a happy ending. Instead, she offers a hook into the forthcoming series, which looks to feature friendship among a trio of wacky women. The misunderstandings and mischief will keep readers turning pages, and the light-weight content makes for easy enjoyment. There’s no moral here, nor any deeper meaning to be gleaned— just entertainment. The paranormal dogs are never fully explained, but Dumont manages to make that a curiosity rather than a cliff-hanger. The series will likely reveal those secrets as it continues, but in the meantime the comedic value makes this particular omission forgivable.

A light-weight, erotic adventure for readers more interested in an entertaining read than deep thought. – Kirkus Reviews

Romance Magazines Get a New Home

If you’ve been following our coverage of Dorchester’s demise, then you know that the publishing giant recently sold off their magazines, True Romance and True Love, which according to a recent Publishers Weekly report had, “published more than 12,000 stories, photos and illustrations from the 1920s to 2011.” That’s a lot of content to be at risk of disappearing, so we know that readers will be thrilled to learn that they can find some of these images, stories and more at TruLOVEstories.com.

This online destination for romance readers has recently been launched by BroadLit, as a spot to spend time reading e-books, accessing online games and more. So, what can you do at TruLovestories.com? Today we take a look at some of the interesting features the site offer for romance lovers.

1) Take a tour of romance throughout the decades

From the 1920s through the 2000s, TLS offers readers a short look at what was going on during the era, and some free e-reads that really whisk you back to days gone by. For each decade you can read two short stories online!

Publishers Weekly Praises TruLoveStories.com

BroadLit, a new transmedia company from the founders of boutique branding and business development firm Broadthink, is launching TruLOVEstories.com, an online romance hub featuring e-books, casual digital games, customized avatars, licensed merchandise, and other features. The site will offer both vintage and original romance content.

“We can now deliver romance to women in a direct way,” says Nancy Cushing-Jones, BroadLit’s chief publishing and transmedia officer. “We’ve seen the technological shift in publishing and the advance of mobile games. We also know that women control the pocketbook in this country, directly or indirectly. They’re the biggest shoppers online, the biggest readers of e-books, and the biggest readers of romance books.”

According to the Romance Writers of America and Simba Information, print and digital romance fiction holds the largest share (more than 13%) of the U.S. publishing market, with annual sales of more than $1.3 billion. In December 2011 an estimated 40% of romance book purchases were electronic.

At the end of last year, BroadLit purchased the subscriber databases and content of True Romance and True Love magazines—the brands have published more than 12,000 stories, photos, and illustrations from the 1920s to 2011—from bankrupt Dorchester Publishing. Starting this month, with When Love Goes Bad, BroadLit is publishing e-book compilations of stories from the magazines, grouped by themes, under the TruLOVE Collection umbrella, priced at $3.99.

The company is also selling original romance novels under the Second Acts banner, a concept created by BroadLit founders Cushing-Jones, chief executive officer Cynthia Cleveland, and chief marketing and creative officer Barbara Weller. The first title in this series is Second Acts: Sleeping with Dogs and Other Lovers priced at $7.99. In addition, Broadlit is in the process of signing outside authors for original romances to be released as ebooks.

All titles will be distributed on TruLOVEstories.com as well as through other ebook channels via Perseus Books Group’s Constellation division. The plan is to publish 20 collections and four original novels the first year, eventually settling into a schedule of at least one new book per month. The company also expects to offer free novellas to fans who sign up for the site.

Aside from e-books, TruLOVEstories.com will distribute original casual online/mobile games. First up is Angry Grrrlfriends in June; two more game titles are in development. (Adult women represent 37% of the interactive game-playing population, according to the Electronic Software Association and the NPD Group, which estimate that 47% of the online gaming market is attributable to casual games.)

TruLOVEstories.com, which will offer opportunities for romance-centric social networking, features free content as well as e-books and games. For example, “A Century of Love” is a decade-by-decade look at romance, with each essay accompanied by two vintage stories from True Love and True Romance, annotated with modern commentary. “It’s interesting to see how contemporary and timeless these stories really are,” Cushing-Jones says of the Dorchester content.

BroadLit has retained a licensing agent to oversee a merchandise program featuring vintage images from the magazines and is in active conversations with marketers of everything from greeting cards to wedding gowns. Merchandise and entertainment vehicles based on the Second Acts brand are a possibility as well.

Broadthink has been in business since 2002, consulting with publishers, authors, licensing companies, and other organizations on new business, product and property development, strategic planning, and branding. Its clients include Dean Koontz and John Lithgow.

SHE-ROES: Kate Winslet Tips Hat for Autism

The Woman Actress, Kate Winslet, has always made an impact in the roles she has portrayed in her career since it began in early 1990s. Possibly best known for her role as “Rose” in the highest grossing movie of its time,Titanic, Winslet has also accrued massive respect within the artistic community, starring in blockbusters as well as indie films. She was the youngest woman to gain a record six Academy Award nominations, and has won awards from other film institutions including the Screen Actors Guild, British Academy of Film and Television and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. After her success in front of the camera, Winslet lent her voice to the HBO documentary A Mother’s Courage: Talking Back to Autism. The film featured a young Icelandic boy, Keli, who suffered from autism and the struggles his family faced in attempting to communicate with their son. After completing this project, Winslet was inspired to make a difference in the lives of autistic individuals and their families.

Her Cause
After speaking with the Keli’s mother, Margret, Winslet was deeply touched by the family’s journey to communicate with their non-verbal son. Keli, although unable to communicate verbally, would write his thoughts on a letterboard. He would write poems, one of which was titled The Golden Hat. After her experience on the documentary, Winslet created the Golden Hat Foundation (GHF), in honor of Keli and his family, to help others in need. Winslet believes that all people with autism should be given the opportunity to learn to communicate, receive suitable academic education and experience social relationships. In achieving these basic needs for autistic individuals, they can truly live a meaningful life. With Winslet’s beliefs in mind, the GHF strives to eliminate barriers for people with autism around the world, and create an environment that recognizes these individuals are intellectually capable. In addition, the GHF creates a supportive social community for those with autism, where they can interact within a positive environment, as well as receive education and job training.
