“I just finished the second book of this series and can’t wait for the third. I liked this book even better than the first. I think the author uses this novel to push the story outside the standard genre of vampire literature. There are castles and catacombs, but no skulking, no attacks on humans, very little blood. The author’s vampires are more interested in their own world politics and power struggles than chasing down humans. They share characteristics with other vampires of the genre, but it is a disservice to consider them as “mere” vampires. She is using the story to meditate on reincarnation, the mysterious space between reincarnations, the connections one can make to past lives and the magic that goes on in front of our eyes but is invisible to us in our cluelessness.
Meanwhile, of course, she gives us a fun romp through medieval times full of longing and lust. Again, the sex is more dreamlike than real, which makes it sweet. The regressions to the past life of Sarah were the best part for me, full of the flavor of the historic period. I hope the third book continues to explore the past and the mysterious communication between the past and the present that the author has created.
