Nothing like a little Super Bowl to make a little Super Magic between this rockin’ couple. Katy Perry and John Mayer seem to have turned up the heat on their relationship, according to recent reports. This news comes as a bit of a shocker, considering the famous musicians have tried and failed on multiple occasions to date. In fact, the couple was nearly engaged in February of 2014 before calling it quits.
However, Mayer was seen waiting anxiously backstage for Perry as she finished the half time show of this year’s Super Bowl. In early January, they were spotted showing some light PDA while on a double date with Girls star Allison Williams and her fiancé Ricky Van Veen at the Chateau Marmont in West Hollywood. According to People magazine, Mayer was spotted greeting Perry with a kiss and the two held hands throughout the night.
This reunion would be a wonderful thing and a perfect pairing. Perry, the pop star with the conservative upbringing and Mayer, the bad boy with the legendary guitar hands, would indeed give us all some great eye candy.
Perry grew up in Santa Barbara, and was the daughter of pastors who refused to let her listen to any kind of “rock music.” She began taking singing and guitar lessons as a child and it didn’t take long to rebel against her parents. She signed with Capital Records in 2007 and her first hit, “I Kissed a Girl” shot up the charts in 2008.
Katy Perry also became famous for her theatricality. On the Warped Tour, she performed “I Kissed a Girl” with a giant tube of lip balm, referencing a line in the song. Perry has also jumped into a larger-than-life cake and appeared in a number of wild outfits while onstage. She has described her style as “Lucille Ball meets Bob Mackie. It’s about innuendo. I want everybody to get the joke, but I want them to think about it for a minute,” she explained to Esquire magazine.
Her third album, Teenage Dream (2010), ventured into disco, and contained the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart-topping singles “California Gurls”, “Teenage Dream”, “Firework”, “E.T.”, and “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” as well as the number-three single “The One That Got Away.” The album became the first by a female artist to produce five number-one Billboard Hot 100 songs, and the second overall after Michael Jackson’s album Bad (1987).
On top of all the success, Perry found the time to marry comedian Russell Brand while in India in 2010. Perry later stated that conflicting career schedules and his desire to have children before she was ready led to the end of their marriage just 14 months later and that he never spoke to her again after sending a text message that he was divorcing her.
After watching Michael J. Fox’s guitar performance as Marty McFly in Back to the Future, John Mayer became fascinated with the instrument. When he turned 13, his father rented one for him. A neighbor gave Mayer a Stevie Ray Vaughan cassette, which cultivated Mayer’s love of blues music. He started taking lessons from a local guitar-shop owner and became so consumed, to the point he concerned his parents enough to take him to see a psychiatrist.
Mayer began his career performing mainly acoustic rock, but after the success of his hit song, “Your Body Is a Wonderland,” he gradually moved towards the blues genre in 2005 by collaborating with blues artists such as B. B. King, Buddy Guy, and Eric Clapton and by forming the John Mayer Trio. Blues influences can be heard throughout his 2005 live album Try! and his third studio album Continuum.
Although Mayer has stated that he never had any interest in drugs, partying, red carpet events or dating celebrities, and that he wanted all his focus to be on his music—he seems to have strayed. Mayer has dated Jennifer Love Hewitt, Jessica Simpson, Minka Kelly, Jennifer Aniston, and Taylor Swift to name a few. ..
He had an attraction to Perry and began sending her texts and relentless flirts, which she reciprocated. The two finally met in person for the first time the night before the VMA’s. The two featured each other in their music videos and wrote several songs incorporating each other into them.
The couple split up several times over the next year for various reasons ranging from lack of independence, to alleged infidelity. The life of a rock star is very difficult, but when you are both in the business it can sometimes be unmanageable. However, something has always lingered between the two that never quite seems to disappear and it is obvious that the passion, love and fire is just too intense to fully keep them apart. Whether their relationship sticks this time or not remains to be seen, what we do know is this couple seems like a good fit and the roller coaster ride of love will keep us all entertained.
“I was madly in love with him. I still am madly in love with him. . . All I can say about that relationship is that he’s got a beautiful mind,” Katy says of John. “Beautiful mind, tortured soul. I do have to figure out why I am attracted to these broken birds.”
