Man Seeking Woman Coming to FXX Next Year

jayMan Seeking Woman, the comedy series starring Jay Baruchel that FX ordered to pilot earlier this year, has now taken one huge step further. FXX, the FX sister network, has given the show a ten-episode order and added the quirky half-hour comedy to its 2015 lineup. According to FX, Man Seeking Woman is “a sweet and absurd look at the surreal life-and-death stakes of dating, and centers on Josh Greenberg (Baruchel), a naive romantic on a desperate quest for love.” Along with Baruchel, the series will co-star Eric André (The Eric André ShowDon’t Trust the B– in Apartment 23), Britt Lower (Unforgettable) and Maya Erskine (Betas).

The pilot was written by Simon Rich, formerly of Saturday Night Live, and with Baruchel, who is wickedly funny, in the lead, it seems like a no brainer that this one was given a ten-episode order.

Man Seeking Woman will premiere on FXX in 2015.

emilia clarkeEmilia Clarke is one of the hottest young actresses working today. Official Trailer for Fifty Shades of Grey

DAKOTA2crop

The trailer for the Fifty Shades of Grey film has finally been revealed, giving fans a first look at Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele on screen.

The film, which has been directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, sees Christian Grey played by a youthful Jamie Dornan with Dakota Johnson in the role of college student Anastasia Steele.

The anticipated movie has been co-produced by Fifty Shades of Grey writer EL James, and has been timed for a Valentine’s Day release in 2015.

Yes, there’s fleeting glimpses of some of the racier material from EL James’ best-seller – although those expecting a sizzling page-for-page re-enactment may well be disappointed, following reports the sex scenes have been toned down for the screen.

A source previously admitted: ‘It’s less racy than the book,’ while those who viewed early footage of the film back in March declared it ‘surprisingly tame’, with suggestions that the focus was more on romance than raunch.

*UPDATE In the week since Universal and Focus Features premiered the trailer for Fifty Shades of Grey, the 2 1/2-minute promo has become the biggest online trailer launch in history, the studio said. Universal scored more than 100 million views across all platforms in a week. That is about the number of books sold globally.

It’s a Mystery! The Power of Fear

By Katherine Sharma

The “dark and stormy night” is a cliché illustration of how writers appeal to universal fears to heighten suspense. Just look at the National Institute of Mental Health’s list of the 10 most common phobias: fear of public speaking, fear of death or dying, fear of spiders, fear of darkness, fear of heights, fear of socializing or being in a crowded place, fear of flying, fear of confined spaces, fear of being unable to escape an open place, and fear of thunder and lightning. So let’s set the scene with our protagonist trapped in a dark closet crawling with spiders while thunder rumbles, lightning flashes, and a killer lurks on the other side of the door! That’s the stuff of a B movie, but good writers do the same thing more subtly. Consider author Stephen King’s cogent remarks about fear in the introduction to his short-story collection Night Shift: “Fear is the emotion that makes us blind. How many things are we afraid of? We’re afraid to turn off the lights when our hands are wet. We’re afraid to stick a knife into the toaster to get the stuck English muffin without unplugging it first. We’re afraid of what the doctor may tell us when the physical exam is over; when the airplane suddenly takes a great unearthly lurch in midair. We’re afraid that the oil may run out, that the good air will run out, the good water, the good life…. Fear makes us blind, and we touch each fear with all the avid curiosity of self-interest, trying to make a whole out of a hundred parts. We sense the shape. Children grasp it easily, forget, and relearn it as adults. The shape is there, and most of us come to realize what it is sooner or later: it is the shape of a body under a sheet.” fear bed

Horror writers and murder mystery writers approach that mortal fear from different angles, perhaps because of the nature of their readers. The murder mystery reader handles fear of “a body under a sheet” by turning it into an intellectual puzzle to solve; and while thrills along the way make the puzzle-solving exciting, the mystery reader’s strong sense of justice and order demands a resolution of fear, that the evil threat is punished and removed. For mystery writers, fear’s blinding quality is also a great way to distract readers from clues to the who, how and why. But I also would hope that by facing fears in fiction, readers can deal better with fears in real life. Cue Dr. Robert L. Leahy, psychiatrist and author of the lauded The Worry Cure and Anxiety Free: Unravel Your Fears Before They Unravel You. One of his suggested ways to cope with fear: “Turn your anxiety into a movie (or a book, I would add). You can let go of a worry by disconnecting yourself from it… sit in the audience, eating popcorn, a calm observer.” For more of Leahy’s advice, see http://www.realsimple.com/health/mind-mood/emotional-health/ten-ways-to-cope-with-anxiety-00000000021548/index.html

Long Way Down Looks Up

A LONG WAY DOWNA Long Way Down, based on Nick Hornby’s novel, is the story of four lost souls — a disgraced TV presenter, a foul-mouthed teen, an isolated single mother and a solipsistic muso – who each decide to end their lives on the same night, New Year’s Eve. When this disillusioned quartet of strangers meet unintentionally at the same suicide hotspot, a London high-rise with the well-earned nickname Topper’s Tower, they mutually agree to call off their plans for six weeks, forming an unconventional, dysfunctional family, becoming media sensations as the Topper House Four and searching together for the reasons to keep on living.

The movie opens in theaters today July 11 and stars Pierce Brosnan, Toni Collette, Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad), and British actress Imogen Poots.

Christian Bale Takes a Turn as Moses in Exodus

exodusFrom Batman to Moses, Christian Bale has played his share of iconic men. In the Ridley Scott’s Old Testament epic Exodus: Gods and Kings, Bale takes on the role of the sea-splitting Moses, a role made famous by Charlton Heston in The Ten Commandments. Scott’s all-star film tells the story of Moses leading the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt, then under rule of the Pharaoh Ramses, played by an almost unrecognizable Joel Edgerton. Ben Kingsley, Sigourney Weaver, John Turturro and Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul are among the other actors who signed on to bring the ancient tale to life, shooting in the exotic locations of Almería, Spain, and Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands.

“The biblical account of Moses is extraordinary, and there was lots of room for us to go to places that The Ten Commandments never dreamed of going,” the Oscar-winning actor told Entertainment Weekly.

Exodus: Gods and Kings continues the Biblical-epic trend that’s been sweeping theaters all year, beginning with Son of God in February andNoah in March. Exodus opens in theaters on Dec. 12.
